Presentation by Dr. Catalena Birek
Xerostomia is defined as a subjective symptom of dry mouth, whereas hyposalivation is an objective measure of decreased salivary gland function. The main causes of xerostomia are: autoimmune sialadenitis (Sjögren’s syndrome), anticholinergic drugs, and radiotherapy for advanced head and neck cancer. The aim of this presentation is to review the etiology, clinical evaluation and management of dry mouth. Considerations for dental treatment planning and oral health rehabilitation in xerostomic patients will be discussed.
